Intro to Philosophy		Living the Good Life - Read Ch 5; Philosophy aims to help you live the good life. The good life is not about money, fame, or physical pleasure. These things are not bad in themselves, but they are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for happiness. God is the good life. Understanding the good life requires a proper understanding of the origin, nature, and purpose of humanity. The good life is both holistic and social. Love of God and others is the essence of the good life.

Intro to Philosophy	Discuss "How to win an argument in the right way"	How to win an argument in the right way - Read Ch 4; b.) Logic, reason, and argumentation are the primary tools of philosophy. These tools must be practiced with love and respect for others. Winning an argument requires more than reason. You must have emotional intelligence (empathy) and virtue (character). It is important to ask good questions, define terms, and take the time to understand other positions and the reasons why people hold those positions. This is one way that we love others in the context of dialogue and debate.

Intro to Philosophy	Discuss "Questions that Matter"	Questions that Matter - Read Ch 3; Philosophy is about asking questions that matter. The question of God’s existence is the most important question dealt with in philosophy. The ontological, cosmological, and moral arguments are examples of arguments for God’s existence. The primary argument against God’s existence is the Problem of Evil. The question of knowledge (epistemology) is another question that matters. God made humans to know the world and equipped them with reason and experience as means to obtain knowledge. Philosophers tend to debate epistemology and divide into two main camps: those who believe that reason is the surest foundation for knowledge are called rationalists, and those who believe that experience is the surest foundation for knowledge are called empiricists. These divisions go all the way back to Plato (a rationalist) and Aristotle (an empiricist) and persist today. If God exists, then there are good answers to the Big Questions about human freedom and the meaning of life. If God does not exist, then it is difficult to avoid a loss of meaning (i.e., nihilism), knowledge (i.e. skepticism), morality (i.e., humanism), and just authority (i.e., anarchism or authoritarianism).

Intro to Philosophy	Discuss "Meet the Philosophers"	Loving God with all your mind and being wise is not just about you. These traits will bless others, help you succeed, and make a positive impact on your community. Philosophy as we know it starts around the sixth century BC and can be divided into four main eras: ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary. Philosophers in each of these eras dealt with similar issues and questions, but each era is unique. Ancient philosophers tended to focus on metaphysics and the nature of reality. Medieval philosophers were especially interested in the relationship between faith and reason in general and in regard to the reasonableness of Christianity in particular. Modern philosophy emphasized epistemology and tended to start from questioning what is real rather than reasoning about what is believed to be real. Contemporary philosophy has been marked by the professionalization and specialization of philosophy and an emphasis on language and detailed analysis

Intro to Philosophy	Discuss "What is Philosophy?"	Read Unraveling Philosophy—Ch 1; Philosophy is a type of human exploration where the primary tools are logic and reason. It celebrates human freedom and the God-given ability to think. Humans are commanded to love God with all our mind, and Jesus embodies the unity of spirit and truth. Ideas have consequences and studying philosophy helps you avoid being taken captive by bad ideas (Col 2:8) and to advocate for truth (2 Cor 10:5). God designed you and commands you to think. The rewards of truth (such as wisdom and happiness) are worth the pursuit. The four main branches of philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics) constitute a worldview. The Christian worldview understands the triune God of Scripture to be the source of goodness, truth, and beauty.
